The armed forces use military grade items to keep their men and women in the best health possible. They have good nutritional value and do not dehydrate you like many civilian meals ready to eat. Their shelf life is also significantly high with many of them lasting five years or more.

When purchasing this type of survival food, make sure to make your purchases from a reputable dealer. Additionally, you should always ensure that you get the quality you are paying for. There are a surprising variety of meals ready to eat available. Turkey dinners, pasta dinners, and veggie burgers are common main entrees. For sides, you can find clam chowder and applesauce as a side, and cookies are always a popular dessert.

Canned Goods

Canned goods are a typical example of non-military grade meals ready to eat. Spam, fruits, and vegetables can all fall into this category. There are survival foods to match everyone's tastes whether you prefer southern foods, are vegetarian, or are just a meat and potatoes type of person.

Whatever kind of survival foods you choose, stock up before it is too late. Disasters often catch people unaware, and relying on humanitarian organizations isn't a wise idea either.    What is the best emergency food manufacturer?
   I have been preparing an emergency home survival kit. I want to look into some food storage options. I’m not looking for a pallet, but maybe just a few months worth.

   I’ve been looking at several manufacturers, and even got a sample from Wise Foods, Inc. (www.wisefoodstorage.com) There are huge differences in costs from a places like Costco and Wise Foods, Inc.

   Does anyone have any experience with emergency food storage manufacturers? Who is the best?

   What type of food do you put into a survival kit?
   If you were making an emergency survival kit that you have to carry with you what food would you pack? It has to light not heavy like cans because it may have to be carried for a distance.The food you pack needs to sustain your energy level and have at least some basic nutrition. It would also need to be non perishable. What would you pack??

   I was actually discussing this with my boyfriend this morning.

   One very important thing I would pack is jam or a form of marmalade. It is very important to have a orange jam to keep vitamin C levels up. Tuna cans are lighter and smaller than other cans and have a lot of healthy oils and protein from the fish. A bag of fruit and nuts would keep you going through out the day between your small meals. Water is an obvious must, you should bring some form of flask that you can heat up to purify water if needed. Make sure it is not made out of lead.

   If you could bring flour and salt. You can make damper which is a type of soda bread. It may not be as good as bread but Australians in the bush and the outback used to cook it out of necessity. You could also bring pasta or rice, your choice. It is light weight and a solid carbohydrate.

   For emergencies you could opt to bring a bottle of multivitamins.

   I hope this helps

   Edit: You will need flint and tinder for fire and possibly a pot or pan to cook.

   I’m not sure of the name of the manuacturer but MRE’s (Meal Ready to Eat) used by the US military are the best choice. They are available on the web and eBay and will last without refrigeration for 3 years.

   How many calories do I need to survive?
   I am putting together some emergency survival kits for me and my family. I need to know how many calories a person needs a day to survive. I’ve done some searching and found multiple answers. Everything from equations to calculators. Some say 1600 a day. Others say 2400 a day. But when I’ve searched ready made kits, they only supply 800 calorie food bars per day. What does a person need to stay alive?

   Recently we have been having quite a few Earth quakes were i live, and i am getting nervous that the big one may go soon. I want to be prepared. Here is what i have so far in my kit. Please let me know if i may need something else. Thanks.

   For water approx. 1 gallon/person per day I would buy a first aid kit in CVS they cost less than 20 bucks other than that the are darn usefull, other than that you seen set!

    u can go for about 2 weeks in extreme situations with no food, so any amount is fine
