Survival Kits for Disaster Preparedness Month
September is the sixth annual National Preparedness Month (NPM), which is the perfect time to remind citizens about the importance of having an emergency preparedness survival kit and plan for their families, businesses, and communities. FEMA's Ready Campaign is asking Americans to think about how prepared they are for anything from earthquakes to terrorist attacks.
www.SurvivalKitsOnline.com has joined a coalition of over 3,200 members across the nation for the third year in a row. This coalition includes a wide range of state and local governments, businesses, and organizations. NPM is held each September to increase public awareness about emergency preparedness. Owners of www.survivalkitsonline.com Chad Allen and Scott Kastner, eagerly participate in this month long event in order it help educate the public and help save lives.
This year, the Ready Campaign is helping Americans understand preparedness goes beyond fire alarms, smoke detectors, dead-bolt locks and extra food in the pantry to change perceptions about emergency preparedness and help Americans understand what it truly means to be "Ready." Having survival kits and supplies on hand for each family member it essential. Each person should have a survival kits at home, work, school and automobile with enough supplies to be self-sufficient for at least a minimum 72 hours.
Survival Food Kits
A study released this summer by Citizen Corps, found that Americans are not as prepared as they think. Fewer than half of individuals 42% have an emergency plan for their home and less, approximately 32% of Americans have 72-hour survival kits.
Making an emergency disaster plan starts with gathering information about where you live, work, go to school and anywhere you spend great amounts of time. You will need to know what types of emergencies or disasters could affect that location. Once you have this information, you are ready to sit with family members to formulate your plan. The plan should include contact information, evacuation procedures including two meeting places, an outside the area designated contact, as well as a complete inventory of all survival kits and supplies. Each person in your family or group should have a good understanding of what to expect should a natural or man-made disaster strike. Once you have a written plan schedule a time twice per year to review and revise this plan.

What type of food do you put into a survival kit?
If you were making an emergency survival kit that you have to carry with you what food would you pack? It has to light not heavy like cans because it may have to be carried for a distance. The food you pack needs to sustain your energy level and have at least some basic nutrition. It would also need to be non perishable. What would you pack??
Just wondering how many homes keep food storage .survival kits??
If there was a food shortage or the world was put on alert from attack.
Do you have any backup ….what would you do in this situation.
How would we avoid mayhem and chaos.
I have a certain amount in reserve (mainly for get snowed in), but that is limeted. I think it would cause a panic and people would buy the supermarkets bare. I guess we should all keep some reserve stock in.
Best earthquake survival kits?
I want to prepare my family in case there is a huge earthquake . I know the basics, battery radio, batteries, firstaid kit, matches, canned foods, can opener, extra clothes, blankets,I even thought of having extra bags of dog and cat food for my pets.Any more suggestions? My main concern is what are the best containers to store water in? You know ones that won’t collapse too easily if something should fall on it? I want to keep these containers outside in our shed since we do not have a garage. We live in the desert where the temp can get upto 120 degrees in the summer.Would this water be drinkable and safe to drink? whatever is left that won’t evaporate that is,and how often should I change it out?To whoever answers, thank you very much.
I was actually discussing this with my boyfriend this morning.
One very important thing I would pack is jam or a form of marmalade. It is very important to have a orange jam to keep vitamin C levels up. Tuna cans are lighter and smaller than other cans and have a lot of healthy oils and protein from the fish. A bag of fruit and nuts would keep you going through out the day between your small meals. Water is an obvious must, you should bring some form of flask that you can heat up to purify water if needed. Make sure it is not made out of lead.
If you could bring flour and salt. You can make damper which is a type of soda bread. It may not be as good as bread but Australians in the bush and the outback used to cook it out of necessity. You could also bring pasta or rice, your choice. It is light weight and a solid carbohydrate.
For emergencies you could opt to bring a bottle of multivitamins.
I hope this helps
Edit: You will need flint and tinder for fire and possibly a pot or pan to cook.
Name the best non perishable foods for natural disaster survival kits.?
Military style MRE’s are good but expensive. Dehydrated foods are good if you have steady water. Canned foods are best — never pour out the water they are packed in — bottled water is the most important thing to have. You won’t last long without water.
what kind of food should go in a survival kit?
what food lasts the longest? is canned food a good choice?
MRE’s!!!! those last forever and have good meals that will give you protein and energy…they might not taste the best at times, but they will do the job…
